What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice of traditional Chinese medicine in which thin needles are placed at specific points in the body.
Acupuncture is based on the idea that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of the body’s life energy, or qi, can cause health issues.
The acupuncture technique is for balancing the flow of energy or life force to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, energy flow will re-balance.
How acupuncture works
Acupuncture seeks to release the flow of the body’s vital energy or “chi” by stimulating points along 14 energy pathways.
Acupuncture is used mainly to relieve discomfort associated with a variety of diseases and conditions, including:
- Chemotherapy-induced and postoperative nausea and vomiting
- Dental pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines
- Labor pain
- Lower back pain
- Neck pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Menstrual cramps
- Respiratory disorders, such as allergic rhinitis
- Tennis elbow
- Hormone treatment
